Pinterested in History - 14 History Pinners you should follow

Pinterest is a great resource for people to discover and share pictures, videos, and websites. While it currently ranks third behind Facebook and Twitter, it is still an excellent way to share resources. With that in mind, here are 14 Pinterest accounts that should be followed by anyone who teaches or loves history.

The National Archives 
The National Archives Pinterest page contains 45 boards with over 910 pins. As the official record keeper of the United States, the Archives are a terrific resources for anyone interested in the nation's history. Our Presidents
This is a Pinterest page from the National Archives that focuses on the the lives of U.S. Presidents. It contains 73 boards and over 1100 pins and features many pictures that are unique to their collection.

The Smithsonian 
The Smithsonian has 42 boards with more than 770 pins, many of which are extremely useful to history teachers. With topics such as "presidential inaugurations" and "black history month" the Smithsonian's Pinterest page is worth a serious look.

National Museum of American History 
The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History Pinterest site offers the greatest array of topics and resources with 58 boards with over 2070 pins. With such a large collection of resources to explore, this site is an absolute must for any fan of American history.

Black History Web

Black History Web Pinterest pages are focused on the rich history of African Americans. They currently have 25 different boards containing over 460 pins with boards related to civil rights, slavery, and military history just to name a few.

The History Girl has 78 boards and over 4800 pins dedicated to history topics. Greece, Rome, Colonial America and decades in the 20th century are just some of the boards you will encounter on her page.

This Pinterest page by Jess Zimmerman has a nice selection of over 9100 pins found on 39 boards. The page is dedicated to American history with interesting topics such as the Indian Wars, World War II, Cold War and women's suffrage.

As the name suggests, this is page is dedicated to history of nations other than the United States. Her site boasts over 4700 pins that can be discovered on her 180 boards. World history teachers will be sure to find what they are looking for on this terrific Pinterest page.

This impressive Pinterest site has 136 boards and more than 8900 pins dedicated to American history. This site contains many of the topics you would expect such as the Civil War and Vietnam War but that's not all you will find. There are boards dedicated to the history states such as Illinois, Utah, and Virginia.

The History Chicks

This Pinterest page is dedicated to the amazing women who have changed history throughout the world. The site contains over 2100 pins on 35 boards about people like Dolley Madison, Hellen Keller, and even Lizzie Borden.

This history themed Pinterest page contains 39 boards with more than  2200 pins. The site has a a large selection of vintage photographs as well as pages dedicated to women's history and even one with historical quotes.

History Reporter

This site, which is curated by historian Tiffany Dziurman, has more than 830 pins on 52 unique boards. This Pinterest page contains many of the topics you would expect and many that may surprise you. You will find boards about Lincoln and Ellis Island but there are also ones with history memes and Christmas' in the past.

The History Lab

The History Lab is focused on American history and the 38 boards are categorized in chronological eras, much like a textbook. The site is curated by history teacher Angela Hamblen and it has over 500 pins on topics such as Japanese American internment and the Civil Rights Movement.

War History Online

If World War II is your topic of choice then this is the Pinterest page for you. There are more than 6200 pins on 27 boards and the vast majority are related to the Second World War. Weapons, planes, events and people are all shown in great detail on the boards found here.

Three Civil War sites you should know about.

The America Civil War is one of the most fascinating and yet tragic events in our history. It was the first American war to be photographed and many of those pictures can be found here at the American Civil War Photo Gallery. There are over 1400 photographs of the people, places, and events of this tragic war. The site has 20 photo albums and most contain dozens on up to hundreds of Civil War pictures. If you teach American history or are just interested in the Civil War be sure to check this site out.

Next is Mike Lynuagh's Virtual Civil War website. This site is dedicated to remembering the nation's most devastating period with pages full of photographs of battlefields and monuments as well these vintage Civil War pictures from the time period.

Last, the  Civil War Daily Gazette is among the best resources I have found regarding the Civil War. It is blog that gives a day by day account of the bloodiest war in America's history. The Gazette was started on November 4, 2010 to commemorate the War's sesquicentennial and will continue until the year 2015. History teachers, students, and Civil War buffs should definitely bookmark this site.

American Centuries - Interactive Online Museum

The Memorial Hall Museum in Deefield, Massachusetts has an tremendously engaging website with a wide variety of interactive exhibits for teachers and students. You can watch colonial tools being used or use the sites "magic lens" and read historical documents. The site has exhibits on colonial clothing and objects and there is a section dedicated to kids activities. The site has sections dedicated to the Civil War, Shay's Rebellion, African American history, and so much more. The Memorial Hall Museum's online exhibits are a great resource for students, teachers, and anyone studying American history.

Sunday's post also featured the humor site Pleated Jeans and Movie Cutouts site where you can buy card board stand ups of just about anything historical.

Monday's post also included Pongr, a site for people to share their favorite products and Gentlemint, a site similar to Pinterest but with a more masculine theme.

Tuesday's post started with History World, a site that contains historical information about people and places from around the globe. There were two other history related site on Tuesday, both centered around the 1960's. The 1968 Exhibit which was dedicated to the events of '68 and a site remembering the Discount Stores of the 1960's.

Wednesday featured two of my favorite resources from this past week. One was Earth Cams, a site where you can find live web cams from famous and interesting places all over the world. My mid-week post also had a great Denver Post photo blog about the Berlin Wall and there was  Television Tunes a site with a collection of T.V. theme songs.

On Thursday, the first site shared was Overlap Maps, a cool site that allows you to compare the sizes of nations, states, bodies of waters and objects with each other. There was also 101 Questions, a site where you write a brief reaction to a picture or video and Headslinger, a site where information and news junkies can share their favorite stories with their friends and family.

Yesterday began with World War II Pictures in Color, a site that contains over 30,000 pictures from World War II. Saturday's post also shared another hilarious video from the folks at Bad Lip Reading, this one about the recent inauguration. Last was a site called Diagrammr, a site where you can create diagrams by writing sentences.

Civil War, Beautiful Pictures, and Infographics

If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then this next website is a site to behold. Beauty in Everything is a site that features hundreds of photographs from Flickr. The subject matter of the photographs is widely varied and consists of people, animals, landscapes, nature, objects, cities and just about anything else. You can scroll through pages of beautiful photographs from today, yesterday, or go to their calendar and pick a date. You are sure to find many pictures that appeal to your sense of beauty.

The Infographic Directory, by David Eaves, offers a large collection of infographics found on the web. Infographics are a growing way to communicate information is a visually appealing way. You can scroll through each page, use the search bar, or select from the categories listed on the right hand side of the site. Even though this site is less than a year old, it has an extensive collection of infographics for you to enjoy.

Internet Resources, Civil War, and Gizmos

Lately I have been coming across many excellent U.S. Civil War resources but among all the resources I have found the Civil War Daily Gazette stands out. It is blog that gives a day by day account of the bloodiest war in America's history. The Gazette was started on November 4, 2010 to commemorate the War's sesquicentennial and will continue until the year 2015. History teachers, students, and Civil War buffs should definitely bookmark this site .

This next site, Internet4classrooms, has been around since 2000 so it is not new but it is new to me. I am really not sure how this site has gone undiscovered (by me) for so long. It has a fantastic array of resources for teachers of all levels and subject areas. It has a section dedicated to common core, online tutorials, internet links, and more. If you've never seen Internet4classrooms, or you haven't been there in awhile, then do yourself a favor and see what it has to offer.

Today's final site is a fun blog called Oh Gizmo. This blog likes to share or poke fun of gadgets, products, stories and things they discover online. Some things they blog about are cool while others are simply bizarre. Either way this blog is always entertaining.

Education, Civil War, and Vintage Modern Ads

Today starts off with a new online educational community called Tioki. This site is a platform for educators to communicate as well as share resources and ideas. The site allows teachers and other education professionals to create, join, and learn from groups of people who have similar backgrounds, experience, and areas of expertise. Best of all, the site is free to join.

Next is Mike Lynuagh's Virtual Civil War website. This site is dedicated to remembering the nation's most devastating period with pages full of photographs of battlefields and monuments as well these vintage Civil War pictures from the time period. History teachers and Civil War buffs should bookmark this site right away.

Last is this very cool collection of modern products and websites being advertised in vintage looking style. The ads feature such big time names such as Facebook, You Tube, Twitter, and Skype to name four and you really do have to see the ads to appreciate the quality of the work. Today I found Civil War Map Games?

My website stash has reached 1400 sites and continues to grow. My earlier focus on Pinterest has caused a major back up and I have to get back to sharing the variety of sites that is the norm for me. All three sites today have an educational slant and could be useful to educators, students, and parents.

Keeping with my recent history theme, here is a site loaded with Civil War maps. It is from a site called the Civil War Trust which also works to save historic Civil War sites.

Next is How Do You Play, a site dedicated to interactive games for kids, school, church and families. Categories include Card games, Board games, Active games, Classroom games , Sports games, Team Building games and Ice Breaker games. This site is worth bookmarking if you interact with children on a regular basis.

Last is a site called Today I Found Out, which was established with the idea that it is always a good idea to learn something new. Under the "articles" tab you will find a lengthy list of subjects from which to read. The site also had  "This day in history" section and a "quick facts" section. If you are interested in learning new things then this site is right up your alley.
